The               news               was               grim.

According               to               CNN,               a               22-year-old               student               from               Boston               was               charged               with               the               death               of               a               New               York               woman.

According               to               the               report,               Craigslist               may               have               been               involved,               as               the               woman               advertised               her               services               as               a               masseuse               on               there               and               that's               the               way               the               victim               and               the               alleged               perpetrator               may               have               met.

Craigslist               is               a               free,               free-for-all               forum               on               the               Internet               where               people               can               advertise               everything               from               cars               and               furniture               for               sale               to               themselves.

There               are               Craigslists               in               nearly               every               major               city               in               the               United               States.

The               website               also               has               a               social               area               where               people               can               meet               for               dates,               gatherings,               groups,               and               to               form               "platonic"               relationships.

This               is               sort               of               a               simplified               version               of               the               other               social               sites               like               Facebook               and               MySpace.

There               is               also               a               discussion               forum.
               Recently,               sites               like               Facebook               and               MySpace               as               well               as               Craigslist               have               come               under               a               lot               of               scrutiny               by               law               enforcement               and               criticism               by               the               public.

There               was               a               recent               suicide               related               to               one               of               the               sites               by               a               teenager               who               suffered               harassment               by               another               user.

It               has               even               made               against               the               law               to               harass               someone               on               one               of               these               sites               now.

And               Craigslist               is               already               under               fire               for               allegedly               soliciting               prostitution               through               its               site.
               And               now               this.

I               can               hear               the               calls               for               stronger               regulation               already,               or               for               abolishing               these               sites               altogether.

In               a               way,               this               reminds               me               of               all               of               the               paranoia               about               rap               and               heavy               metal               music               back               in               the               nineties               when               several               congressmen               called               out               for               a               ban               on               these               types               of               music.

Ozzy               Osbourne's               song               "Suicide               Solution"               comes               to               mind.

It               was               linked               to               a               young               man's               committing               suicide               after               listening               to               the               song.

Video               games               were               blamed               for               the               increased               violence               in               the               schools.

Way               back               in               the               fifties,               even               comic               books               were               blamed               for               all               kinds               of               social               ills               commited               by               the               youth               of               that               time.
               About               the               only               thing               that               has               come               out               of               all               of               this               is               the               comics               code               and               stronger               ratings               put               on               the               labels               of               video               games               and               records.

It               seems               very               easy               to               blame               the               lack               of               a               family               structure               and               an               uncaring               society               on               video               games,               movies,               and               the               Internet.

An               outside               source               is               always               the               bogyman               in               these               types               of               situations.
               Craigslist               is               the               embodiment               of               what               the               Internet               was               designed               for               before               it               was               taken               over               by               big               corporations.

It's               a               place               with               few               restrictions               and               most               importantly,               it's               free.

The               Internet               is               like               the               great               big               world               itself.

There               are               dangers               in               it.

There               are               parts               of               the               world               that               are               dangerous               to               explore               like               the               Amazon               jungle,               for               example.

Does               that               mean               that               we               should               tear               it               all               down,               cover               it               with               concrete,               install               video               cameras,               and               extra               lighting?

No,               that               would               be               absurd.

Regulating               Craigslist               because               of               a               few               unfortunate               incidents               would               amount               to               pretty               much               the               same               thing.
