Review of cars for cheap::Where to Buy Cars Under $1000
Being a college student is rough, never having enough money, trying to figure out a major, and really trying to sort out the rest of your life. One of things that almost every single college student wants is a car. And while some parents may buy their children cars, others have to pay for their own cars, and that's where this article comes in! I would say the key things to keep in mind when searching for a car for a college student, are the basic things that they will be using it for. Gas mileage needs to be kept in mind, as well as cargo room in the vehicle, as well as reliability and cost to maintain and cost of insurance. When looking at all of these things, several cars come to mind. I would advise staying with a car that is older then 2001, as insurance will be much cheaper. Let's take a look at the top three cars. Toyota Camry Now, you had to know this car was on the list. Consider looking at Camry's anywhere from 1994-2001. These cars are known for their reliability, gas mileage (30+ mpg for the 4 cylinders), and their relative low cost of maintenance. There is a reason that the Toyota Camry is the most bought car in America. Camry's are 4 doors, providing lots of room, and come with a spacious trunk. As this is an older sedan, and doesn't have a luxury or sports car tag on it, insurance cost is also relatively low. Honda Civic The Honda Civic is one of the most well known cars in the world, and perfect for college students. I would recommend the 94-99 style of the Honda Civic. They have excellent gas mileage (35+), and also have many different options. The Honda Civic comes in an LX, EX, DX, HX, and then the SI. Each has many different choices, ranging from better gas mileage, to more options, to more horsepower. For the most efficient in gas mileage, I would look at the DX or HX. The cars also come in 2-door and 4-door, so if space isn't that big of a deal, go for a coupe, whereas if it is, go with a 4 door. Hondas are known as one of the most reliable, and cheapest to own cars, so cost isn't that big of a deal, and the motors last forever (250k+ miles). Another car to check out in this category would be the Honda Accord. The Accords have a little more room, but sacrifice gas mileage. Volkswagen Jetta/Golf/GTI These cars are starting to become more and more popular with teenagers as they become cheaper to buy, and it's for a good reason. Both the Jetta and the Golf (also called a GTI) have tons of room, average higher then 25 miles per gallon, and are pretty cheap to own. The Golf is a little more spacious because it is a hatchback, whereas the Jetta is a sedan. For these, you can look into two different body styles, one of which is called the MKIII, which is years 1991-1999, and then you could also look into the earlier years of the MKIV, which is years 1999-2006. These cars also come in different variants, with the most distinguishable feature being between the engines, some coming with a 1.8L/2L 4 cylinder, or a 2.8L v6. Obviously, the v6 has a little more power, but sacrifices gas mileage. Now, all of you should note that the reliability of these cars is also dependent on previous owners, and keeping up the simple maintenance, such as oil changes, timing belt changes, and keeping your brakes/tires good. The cars listed above are all very strong and would make excellent cars for college students on a budget, and will last 250k miles if treated right. I would recommend buying one with no more then 130k miles on it, and making sure that the car has been taken care of. Also, if you know how to drive a straight drive, they get better gas mileage then an automatic; so don't forget to check those out if you can! If you're looking for some more choices, here is a simple list of just some cars you could look up on your own. If you're looking for a sportier car, check out these: Honda Prelude, Nissan 240sx, Mazda Miata, or a Toyota Celica, all in the 1991-1999 years. If you don't want to sacrifice space, and would prefer a 4 door sedan that's great on gas mileage, then check out these: Subaru Legacy, Mazda Protégé, Nissan Sentra, or Toyota Corolla, once again in the 1991-1999 stages. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_Golf http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_Civic http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_Camry |
