Long               Island               is               a               great               place               for               New               Yorkers               to               get               out               of               the               city               and               an               awesome               alternative               to               the               Manhattan               hustle               and               bustle               for               visitors               to               the               area.

Number               one               on               the               list               has               to               be               the               Hamptons.

From               the               beach               to               the               McMansions               to               the               glitz               and               glamour               of               Hollywood               types,               "The               Hamptons"               isn't               your               typical               resort               area.

From               Memorial               Day               to               Labor               Day,               the               little               corner               of               Long               Island               is               jam-packed               every               weekend.
"The               Hamptons"               really               refers               to               the               area               around               Suffolk               County's               East               Hampton,               which               was               founded               in               the               1600s               as               a               farming               community.

In               the               1800s               it               became               a               quick               "country"               getaway               for               weather               Manhattanites.

Now,               the               beaches               of               East               Hampton               are               consistently               among               the               top               10               in               the               country,               thanks               to               the               white               sandy               and               relatively               easy               access               to               the               Atlantic               Ocean.
Some               famous               Hamptons               residents               include               Billy               Joel,               Christie               Brinkley,               Renee               Zellweger,               and               Martha               Stewart.

Sean               "Diddy"               Combs               throws               a               big               party               there               every               year.

And               of               course               the               gals               from               Sex               and               the               City               angled               to               get               invitations               to               houses               there               every               year.
If               you               want               to               go               to               the               Hamptons,               there               are               several               ways.

The               best               is               the               Hamptons               Jitney.

That's               my               favorite               way.

It's               inexpensive,               it               is               small               dog               friendly,               it               has               food               on               board               and               wi-fi.

You               can               hitch               a               ride               on               the               Jitney               for               as               little               as               $44               round               trip!

Gas               will               of               course               set               you               back               more               than               that.

Of               course,               you               could               still               get               stuck               in               traffic,               but               at               least               you               can               sleep               or               read.
You               can               drive               to               the               Hamptons,               but               parking               is               pretty               much               nonexistent,               plus               the               Long               Island               Expressway               on               the               weekend               can               be               torture!

If               there's               an               accident               ...

fugheddaboutit.

You'll               be               stuck               on               the               LIE               for               hours               and               might               as               well               pull               over               and               get               your               tan               on               the               expressway's               shoulder.

To               drive,               you're               better               off               to               go               super               early               in               the               morning               or               ridiculously               late               at               night.
There               is               also               the               train,               which               I               don't               find               as               convenient               as               the               bus               (the               Jitney.)               You               have               to               transfer               at               Jamaica               Station,               and               once               I'm               on,               I               don't               like               to               get               off.

But               if               train               travel               is               more               your               speed,               then               the               Long               Island               Rail               Road               is               for               you.

Tickets               cost               as               little               as               $15.25               one-way.
Once               you're               there,               you               can               stay               at               a               hotel,               bed               and               breakfast,               do               a               house               share               or               just               go               for               the               day.
Because               there               are               so               many               options,               I               won't               go               into               them               all.

I'll               just               give               you               general               prices               for               the               2008               season.
               Shares?

They               typically               run               about               6k               for               the               season,               but               have               been               sold               out               for               months.

Check               out               places               like               craigslist               for               people               trying               to               get               out               of               their               shares               for               certain               weekends.

You               can               find               rates               for               about               $450               a               weekend.

Rates               start               around               $150               per               night               during               high               season               and               weekdays               and               go               up               considerably               from               there.

The               best               thing               though,               many               of               them               are               small               dog               friendly.

So               it's               best               to               check               the               website               for               reservations.

The               tour               is               about               90               minutes               and               is               led               by               a               naturalist               from               nearby               Stony               Brook               University.

It's               best               to               drive               out               the               Sanctuary,               because               you'll               probably               want               to               visit               Teddy               Roosevelt's               house,               which               is               about               a               mile               away.
